Episode 187/ Aired April 19
A day after giving birth to a healthy baby girl, 22-year old nursing graduate Ella Mae Septimo received good news – her entry, “Dakila Ka Ama,” was chosen to compete once again on ASOP. This time, for the Producer’s Pick episode.
Producer’s Pick is when a select of losing entries from previous rounds are handpicked by producers for another chance at the finals.
Ella Mae’s pop ballad draws inspiration from her own life’s struggles particularly during the time when she had to deal with her family’s disapproval and acceptance of her early motherhood. She wants to send a message of thanksgiving for God’s unconditional love to us regardless of the bad choices we’ve made in the past.
OPM diva Dessa was wowed by the song and by the soulful interpretation of the petite 17-year old recording artist Ruth Regine Reyno. Reyno’s rendition prompted the guest judge to reminisce her own powerful performances onstage in the 90’s.
Resident critic “Doktor Musiko” Mon del Rosario commended the energy landscaping or the buildup and even called the melodic structure as “superb”. The only flaw was a grammatical error on one verse.
So it wasn’t entirely a shocking surprise when with an average score of 89%, Mama Ella Mae finally brought home the bacon worth P20,000 by winning this month’s 3rd weekly round.
Other returning contenders included “Sa Pangalan Mo,” written by factory worker Robert Saballa, interpreted by Walton Zerrudo and “Ikaw Lamang ang Sinasamba,” by company messenger Randy Pusing, interpreted by the Bueno Sisters trio.
Award winning composer Jungee Marcelo also returned as guest judge whose technical advice on songwriting is as insightful as Doktor Musiko’s.
