Last night’s musical battle was a showcase of exciting performances by no less than The Voice alumni.

Celebrity guest judges were award-winning solo artist Ivy Violan and TV host/comedian Arnel Ignacio, whose spontaneous punch lines kept the night extra fun.

But for Sunday’s weekly winner, the fun has just begun.

It has always been Leonardo de Jesus’ dream to join ASOP.  On Sunday night, he lived out his dream when his song not only qualified but actually won the week’s bout.

Owing to his calling as choir member, his joyful ballad Pahintulutan Mo talks about asking God if he may continue singing Him praises in his new life in heaven.

For guest judge Arnel Ignacio, Pahintulutan Mo’s rousing melodic lines alone already speak volumes. He compared the style to that of popular songwriter Ogie Alcasid’s earlier upbeat hit ballads.

Fellow guest judge Ivy Violan praised the arrangement and admitted that the entry delivered everything she wanted to hear in a praise song.

Credit also goes to the dynamic interpretation of singing chemist and The Voice finalist Philippe Go.

The other two entries were equally worthy contenders in commercial appeal.

Four-time ASOP contestant Eduardo Cadorna described his entry Ang Dios Ang Gagawa as a slow soul.  It was a soothing fusion of jazz and R&B performed in effortless coolness by Sol Glass.

But Arnel wasn’t feeling it and described the entry as a bundle of short melodies leading nowhere.  Resident judge Mon del Rosario explained that the song’s style is atypical of praise songs because it doesn’t follow what the general public has come to expect: high points, tension and resolution.

Next entry was the R&B How Can I Be Worthy by teacher Christopher John Balangatan and performed impressively by The Voice finalist Daryl Ong. Daryl gave justice to this song and was outstanding in his interpretation.

Arnel said the song brought interest and color.  Ivy said the sincere lyrics captured her heart.
