Episode 198/ Aired on July 5
“Ang bahay namin ay nasunog…salamat po Ama,” goes the intriguing first line of Dennis Roxas’ winning composition Salamat Po Ama. Will you still praise God during difficult times? This was the question in his mind that sparked an idea for a praise song.
Interpreted by Charlie Fry, the song starts off with a series of puzzling statements played playfully over a doo wop melody.
“Kamote lang ang anim hapunan…salamat po Ama,
Banig naming kakapiraso, nagkasya pa rin kaming pito
Isa lang ang aming kumot, ngunit ginaw ay talo
Maraming salamat po, Ama salamat sa Iyo. “
It closes with expository lines that cleverly ties up the story.
“Dati kasi sa bahay naming malaki
Parang di magkakakilala, ang bawa’t isa ay busy….
Bihirang makumpleto, lahat ay nasa kwarto…..
Salamat po Ama, ngayon kami’y pamilya na.”
Judges were unanimously impressed by the refreshing concept with guest judge Jungee Marcel, who’s also a composer, grudgingly admitting he’s jealous that it wasn’t written by him.
The highest compliment came from other guest judge, pop-singer Rachel Alejandro, who practically commissioned Roxas when she asked if he could write for her should she launch a new album.
The two other entries followed the more conventional ballad style praise song. Marc Antonio Locso of Cavite wrote Dakilang Layunin and performed by Miguel Mendoza. First time composer Ranel Montero was also a contender with Ikaw Ang Lagi Kong Kasama, interpreted by Shanne Velasco.
With a shiny new Song of the Week title under his belt Dennis Roxas earns a chance to compete in the monthly finals. Not bad for a piece of music that was created overnight
